History

There are not many signs that can affirm the populated centre existed before the Muslim period but, what is definitely certain is that during the Muslim domination the village existed and was known as 'Avincabacer'.

In 1149, Ramon Bernguer the 4th donated the place to the Abbot of Santa Maria de Monteflabon in order to found a monastery. Shortly after its construction , in 1158, the monastery and its lands were given to the bishopric of Tortosa and that is how the lordship of Cabacés started. The lordship also included the villages of Margalef, La Bisbal, La Vilella Baixa, La Figuera and El Lloar, all of them under the jurisdiction of Tortosa.

In 1185, Bishop of Tortosa Ponç de Mulnells gave a population permit to the inhabitants of Cabacés. From then on, the barony was held by the priors of Tortosa together with the Counts of Prades. The county disappeared in the 19th century.

In 1991, Bishop Ricard Mª Carles considered that the title was an old privilege and resigned.

Remarkable places

Cabacés keeps many elements from its Medieval past (some pointed arches, the porch on El Pla de la Bassada ...)

There is nothing left from the old castle since, in 1933, the current school was built over its foundations.

The parish church worships the Nativity of the Virgin and was built in the 17th century. Its façade was repaired in 1823. The building keeps a Gothic altarpiece and a painting of the Virgin from 1624. The most curious element is the bell tower, rather small and with a shape that makes it different to the other bell towers in the area.

Near the village, there is the hermitage of Sant Joan and the fountain of El Casal.
One kilometre away from town, on the left bank of the Montsant Gully there is the hermitage of Sant Roc, a small building(built around 1594) with Renaissance features that lately has been repaired.

The most important hermitage is located in the town centre, at 560 metres above sea level, over a fountain.

Four kilometres away from town, the Pont Vell (old bridge) is said to date from the Roman period, although it is most likely to date from Medieval times. It is a stone structure formed by three spans.

The museum 'l`Eco del Greco' keeps reproductions of this painter's works of art.

'La Covassa' is a grotto used as a shelter during the Civil War and finally, 'La Creu' is a beatiful spot that overlooks the village.
